Key Benefits of PMJJBY

PMJJBY is designed to provide basic financial protection to the family of an insured person in the event of death.

₹2 Lakh Life Insurance Cover

If the insured person dies due to any covered cause while the policy is active, ₹2 lakh is payable to the eligible nominee, subject to applicable scheme conditions.

Low Annual Premium

The current full-year premium is ₹436 per subscriber per year, making the scheme accessible to people who may not be able to afford higher-cost life insurance plans.

Death Due to Any Cause

The scheme provides life cover for death due to any cause, subject to the applicable waiting/lien-period rules for new enrolments.

Simple Bank-Linked Enrollment

Premium is generally deducted automatically from the subscriber’s designated bank or post office account after consent for auto-debit is given.

Renewable Every Year

PMJJBY is a one-year life insurance cover that can be renewed from year to year, subject to continued eligibility and payment of the required premium.

Who Is Eligible for PMJJBY?

A person can generally join PMJJBY if:

  • They are between 18 and 50 years of age

  • They have an account with a participating bank or post office

  • They give consent for premium auto-debit

  • They join through only one bank/post office account if they hold multiple accounts

A person who joins before completing age 50 may continue under the scheme according to the applicable continuation rules and premium payment conditions.

Documents You May Need

The exact requirements can vary slightly depending on the participating bank, post office or insurer. Generally, keep the following ready:

  • Aadhaar or other accepted identity proof

  • Bank or post office account details

  • Registered mobile number

  • Date of birth information

  • Nominee details

  • Enrollment/consent form, where required

The bank or post office may ask for additional verification depending on the customer’s account and KYC status.

How to Apply for PMJJBY

PMJJBY enrollment is generally completed through a participating bank or post office.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

Confirm that you are within the eligible age group and have an active account with a bank or post office offering PMJJBY.

Step 2: Contact Your Bank or Post Office

Ask whether PMJJBY enrollment is available through:

  • Bank branch

  • Post office

  • Internet banking

  • Mobile banking

  • Other digital enrollment facilities offered by your institution

Availability of online enrollment depends on the participating institution.

Step 3: Submit Your Consent

Provide consent to enroll in PMJJBY and authorize the annual premium to be deducted automatically from your designated account.

Step 4: Add Nominee Details

Provide correct nominee information so that the claim process can be completed more easily if the insured person dies.

Step 5: Keep Sufficient Balance

Ensure sufficient balance is available in your bank/post office account for the applicable premium to be auto-debited.

Step 6: Confirm Enrollment

After successful enrollment and premium deduction, check your bank/post office confirmation or insurance certificate/details and keep them safely for future reference.

Premium and Mid-Year Enrollment

The standard annual premium is ₹436. For people enrolling for the first time during the middle of the policy year, the official scheme currently allows proportionate premium amounts:

  • June–August: ₹436

  • September–November: ₹342

  • December–February: ₹228

  • March–May: ₹114

At renewal, the full annual premium is applicable.

Important 30-Day Waiting Period

For a person enrolling in PMJJBY for the first time, there is generally a 30-day lien/waiting period for death due to causes other than accident.

If death occurs due to a non-accidental cause during this initial period, the claim may not be admissible. Accidental death coverage is not subject to this same initial waiting period according to the current scheme rules.

How Does the Claim Process Work?

If the insured subscriber dies while validly covered under PMJJBY, the nominee or eligible claimant can initiate the claim through the bank/post office linked to the scheme.

The general process may include:

  1. Inform the participating bank or post office about the death.

  2. Obtain or download the PMJJBY claim form.

  3. Complete the claimant/nominee details.

  4. Submit the required death-related documents.

  5. Provide bank details and other requested information.

  6. The participating institution forwards the claim to the associated insurer.

  7. The insurer verifies and processes the claim according to scheme rules.

Current government guidance states that banks/post offices have been asked to forward claim documents electronically to the partner insurer within seven days of submission, and insurers are expected to settle valid claims within seven days of receiving complete claim documents.

Documents Generally Required for a Claim

Depending on the circumstances, the nominee may be asked for:

  • Completed claim form

  • Death certificate

  • Nominee/claimant identity proof

  • Bank account details of the claimant

  • Insurance/enrollment details

  • Additional documents where required by the insurer

For accidental or unusual deaths, additional records may be required according to the circumstances and insurer’s process.

Who Should Consider PMJJBY?

PMJJBY can be especially useful for people who need basic life insurance protection at an affordable premium, including:

  • Workers

  • Salaried employees

  • Self-employed individuals

  • Small earners

  • People with dependent family members

  • Individuals who currently have little or no life insurance

PMJJBY provides basic financial protection and may not replace the need for a larger term insurance policy where a family has significant financial responsibilities.

PMJJBY vs Regular Life Insurance

PMJJBY provides a simple and affordable ₹2 lakh life cover, while private term or life insurance products may offer much higher coverage amounts and different features.

PMJJBY can therefore be viewed as a basic protection scheme rather than a complete replacement for all long-term family insurance needs.
